Box Office: Kurbaan Flops;
Friday, November 20, 2009

A similar problem is facing Kareena and Saif Ali Khan's Kurbaan, which was earlier said to be named Jihad. Despite much hype over the Karan Johar backed flick about a Delhi Punjabi woman Avantika Ahuja and her muslim terrorist lover Ehsaan Khan, featuring flaunted sex scenes between Kareena and Saif Ali Khan, this film isn't exactly doing a Bunty & Babli at the box office, as evidenced through its weak screenings early on Thursday and Friday. From the advance itself it was clear Bombay opening records were not in jeopardy. But Friday actual box office is painting a worse prognosis for the film. That this Karan Johar film could actually be heading to be a box office flop, making it the first flop of the filmmaker's career. Though discerning box office observers are aware his directorial KANK in 2006 too witnessed a massive crash after opening.

Kurbaan has been allocated lots of screenings because of the banner. However Karan Johar name too is going to take a beating after this. The Friday opening in the multiplexes where it was expected to fare best, was only about 35-40%. Of course that's better than Tum Mile, but far below expectations and much below what's necessary for this film. Overseas, the film may fare better with the India, Pakistan, former East Pakistan ie Banglades diaspora which is more eager for these topics and castings about Islam and Global Terrorism. In India however, despite sex scenes being flaunted, with 26/11 being near, people are more concerend and angry about their own national security breach last year, if anything else.

The single screen response to Kurbaan has been dismal with opening collections as low as 10% in centers like Bharuch. The Philadelphia and New York shot Kurbaan is said to cost between 50-60 crores. So in short, unless all India collections show a big turnaround, this Karan Johar fare on terrorism with the cast of Saif Khan and real life partner Kareena is about to be a major box office failure of the year. The failure of Kurbaan would be further bad news for Karan Johar's next Shahrukh Khan venture on roughly similar setup, My Name is Khan, which too is set in America along similar themes.

The one Khan actor who has been able to pull it off by playing it down the middle politically and on more nationalistic themes to his box office advantage has been Aamir Khan, whose Ghajini is a bigger hit than any Shah Rukh Khan-Karan Johar-Aditya Chopra hit of the decade and whose next 3 Idiots too is expected to take a solid opening. Starting from cross-border infiltration hit film Sarfarosh in 1999, Aamir Khan has had very few flops in India over the last 10 years. 3 Idiots too is based on the culture of one of India's most prized institutions, the IITs, arguably partly responsible for India emerging a technologically advanced nuclear power by the 1990s.

MY REVIEW FOR THE MOST SPECIAL MOVIE TO ME! I JUST CAME BACK!

Let me start off by saying, Kurbaan is not for everyone. If you’re looking for pure entertainment, laughs, masti, dhamaal, then wait another week for DDD.
Kurbaan is a very dark, gritty, and stark movie. And its heavily infused with views on Islam, terrorism, its influences, and its REAL. It might offend some, it might not. It doesn’t take any sides, it doesn’t preach. It doesn’t glorify terrorism, NOT AT ALL. I don’t know why some people got the idea that this movie glorifies terrorism, because it doesn’t. It shows how brutal and how inhumane those acts are. But at the same time, it has emotions, and reasons, and motives. And its up to you to decide if what happens I morally good or bad. The movie does not preach.
Second, does it have loopsholes. YES, lol. It has a few, but they are not that many. You can overlook them, and it doesn’t affect the movie in the least. Third, OMG What was the big deal about intimacy in the movie? IT WAS NOTHING! I swear, Rasiya had intimate moments that lasted what…a min? lol And the other stuff was so brief. Like two casual kisses, that’s all.
My biggest complaint with Kurbaan? SAIFEENA! LOL
What the hell man! Their romance ended after 20 mins into the movie. That’s a good thing I know, coz so much starts to happen, that their relationship takes a complete backseat. BUT I WAS SO DISAPPOINTED with lack of cutesy moments. Infact, I saw some in the making that I didn’t see in the movie. I WAS PISSED! What the hell man! I was not a happy desu, lol
But its ok, because the thriller takes over and keeps you completely engrossed. So does Kurbaan work? For me, it CERTAINLY does. Will it work for everyone? NO
Because there are certain moments in the movie that are very heavy with dialogue and interaction, and thoughts, and ideology. There’s not a lot happening in those moments except thoughts being exposed and ideas being exchanged. I can see why some people felt Kurbaan was really slow. I was into it because I’m interested in these things. Motives, reasons, thoughts, etc.
You all know the story, I’m not gonna get into it.
But Kurbaan is a very well made movie and an attempt at something not seen before. Some sequences in the movie leave you spellbound and amazed. The dialogues are very real yet powerful, and same with reactions of the characters. And that brings me to the strength of the movie. PERFORMANCES!

Om Puri was great. He played his part exceptionally well, and that’s what you expect from Om. He was believable as the fundamentalist Bhaisaab, who has a strong influence on everyone.
Kiron Kher! MY FAVORITE! Haha I LOVE HER! She was PERFECT for the role of Appa. Infact she adds some comic relief in the movie as well with her lines. I mean I loved her here. And watch out for her in the climax.
Diya was beautiful and also good in her special appearance. I wish this girl was given more chances to play such roles.

Now the award winning trio.

VIVEK! VIVEK VIVEK! OH MY GOD. WHERE HAS HE BEEN? If this guy doesn’t win some kinda award for KUrbaan I will be very disappointed. He was fantastic! In many moments, I would say he overshadowed all the other characters. Riyaaz was dynamic, and zealous. He had fire in him, intensity, and the spark for revenge. His dialogue delivery was very powerful. And his expressions BANG ON! Watch out for him in the scene after the “test by Bhaisaab”. I think you all remember the tear drop scene right? Intense! 10/10

Now who am I missing?
BEBO!!!
Yes its her best role since JWM. And I would say even more powerful than Geet. Avantika has so much more layers and scope to perform. She’s a fighter, and her emotional range is greater than that of Geet. She gives an award winning performance in the movie, whether in the scene where Ehsaan reveals his identity and she begins to shout her pain at the betrayal, or the climax, or the scenes preceding that. The pain is clearly etched on her face, and her eyes do the talking in many instances. This girl doesn’t need dialogues to emote. Her conversations with Ehsaan were very emotional and at the same time, dynamic. BRILLIANT BRILIANT. I’m so glad that she was a part of Kurbaan, because she has completely made up for the blunders she churned out post JWM with this ONE movie. I am a very proud bebo fan today! FULL MARKS FOR KAREENA!

And FINALLY
EHSAAN KHAN. No not saif, EHSAAN.
Because I completely forgot I was watching Saif Ali Khan on screen. Most people felt he was overshadowed. I feel that he performed the BEST out of everyone, because nowhere could I connect him to the Saif I’ve seen offscreen. He became Ehsaan. His mannerism and body language were restrained, and very subtle. His eyes did the talking. Unlike Riyaaz and Avantika, Ehsaan didn’t reveal inner turmoil. HE kept everything inside. He was a closed box. But Saif KILLED IT. How I despised him in some portions, when his monstrous side would emerge. Sometimes I felt that he wasn’t human. And I completely understood how Avantika felt. Why she recoiled away from him in disgust. HE was the coldest, most stone hearted in the movie….EXCEPT when it came to Avantika. Then he would change. His eyes would soften, he would become vulnerable. And the pain would be visible on his face everytime Avantika flinched away from his touch. He was clearly a man torn between his motives and his love.
SAIFEENA did not disappoint me. Infact, I didn’t even think of them as saifeena. I was watching Ehsaan and Avantika and they were each other’s antithesis. Their tense moments left me stunned. They fed off each other’s performances. If one was brilliant, the other even better. Now I have even more reason to be a fan of this couple. Not just because I adore them offscreen, but they are SUCH A POWERFUL ONSCREEN DUO. And I don’t mean their chemistry. I mean their talent. I just wish their love story had been a bit more developed. I think that the focus shifted so much to the thriller, that there were hardly any scenes left between Ehsaan and Avantika after the revelation. And I think the climax could have made that much more impact if the audiences FELT that Ehsaan and Avantika really really loved each other. Which was a feeling that was kind of lost in the story since Ehsaan becomes so cold hearted and Avantika swings between love and hate. They really needed to develop that, a LOT MORE.
So all in all, I AM KURBAAN OVER KURBAAN, lol
Really, I LOVED the movie. Because it was GENUINELY a good offering. Yes it falters in some places, and the FBI are pathetic. I sorta laughed at the lead FBI guy. Geez he was in such horrible shape, lol! But that didn’t take away from Kurbaan. I find these kind of stories very fascinating and enthralling. RENSIL, this is MY KINDA MOVIE.

9/10 (leave room for bias, lol)

My Review enjoy!

First when i saw the trailer i tough i was going to be disappointed again with the Super Flop ''New York'' because they were referring the movie to the 9/11 , and then i said that probably because it's an Karan Johar movie i'll see it. Seriously that was a really smart move because i spend those hour's watching a movie i didn't wanted to end! Kurbaan is intelligent and dark at the same time , it's not like NY who really disappointed me last time. Rensil D'Silva brings to you an entertainment you won't find anywhere else and seriously i didn't' even referred myself to Johar who produced the movie i was like Wow! Rensil is a genius. At first i wasn't really sure at the star cast of the movie Kareena-Saif it was cheesy but when i saw their'r on screen chemistry i almost forgot my hate for them and i could say that the movie itself is going to be an Huge Competition to My Name Is Khan who is directed by Johar himself. Kareena's acting really made me forgot how terrible was she in Kambakth Ishq she really portrayed her character well. Saif was the absolute choice he was really convincing in the movie as well. The music what to say about the soulful track's Shukran-Allah & Dua they were amazing and really touching! On the Whole Kurbaan is an good entertainment and an good movie too! My Verdict 8/10 Thumb's Up! D'Silva

My review - Spoiler

This film discuss very sensitive and strong issue and when you decide to make film like this you should be careful and i think they succeed in handling this issue they present it in nice way, kurbaan is kind of film the you should see it till the last second before judging , when first half end i was like what the hell was that for a second i thought it will be anil sharma kind of films muslim are bad ,terrorist blah blah blah but thanks god it wasn't , the 2 vivek scenes in 2nd half [class room & last scene with saif] made the film for me it was just outstanding i felt like stand and clap :clap2: . from what i have seen i think this first time they discuss the islam in this way esp class room scene very strong and great lines i love it .. even though the ending was sad but i walked out happy because of the message of the film in every religion, country, city or home there are good and bad people if some one was bad didnt mean all are bad same otherway but unfortunately these days most of the people just focus on bad persons and judge on others depend on them and it's important to mention it's not perfect film there was few things i diss agree/didn't like , one of them was that muslim men did not allow their wife to work which not right anyway THE ENDING WAS AWESOME the climax hold your breath moving to performances

performances- In Order

Vivek: i wouldn't say his performance came as surprise because vivek is talented actor but his personal life affected him he got the best lines and scenes, almost all his scenes will stay with you after the film end , people shouted in coffee scene :haha: .. so Riyaz Masood you will definitely get my vote this year :surrendertruce:

Kareena: all what i have to say we sholud close the chapter of looking for best actress this year we found the winner .. but i thought her role will be bigger no problem quality more important then quantity :beerchug:

Saif: what can i say about him ,this film is about Ehsaan life .. he did awesome job and he looks hot but his character was bit confusing like at the end he told vivek go and help them why? because he realized that what was he was doing is wrong or just because kareena was there ?! :hmm:

Dia looks gorgeous, others were good minus Om puri :curse:

Overall must watch film heart touching one , LOVE YOU KARAN

8.8/10

seriously, i haven't seen an indian movie since that last srk movie last year.
i'm so glad i decided to go with my parents to watch this.
i found it to be educational, and not offensive at all towards muslims; this is coming from being a muslim myself.
and the "sex" scenes, definitely not sex scenes at all, it was beautiful in my opinion. my heart like melted when i saw it.
