Kurbaan is an edgy thriller (MY RATING 3.5/5)
Review
First things first, Kurbaan keeps up the promise of being a thriller. Without wasting much time, this love story with a backdrop of terrorism keeps the audience hooked to its proceedings.
Avantika (Kareena) and Ehsaan (Saif) are professors at Delhi University. The bond over coffee and conversation (a la KJo style); and soon land up in New York as a married couple. They move into their home-sweet-home with conservative Muslims as their neighbour. When a next door woman pleads Avantika to help her save her life, hell breaks loose. What follows next, is a series of incidents that suckks Avantika into a vortex of danger and intrigue.
Direction
Writer-turned-director Rensil D'Silva, who has penned films like 'Aks' and the widely acclaimed 'Rang De Basanti' , scores big time with this intense film as his directorial debut. He is successful in keeping the audience glued to their seats without blinking an eye. A few scenes like the one just after Kareena and Saif's steamy love-making and the one where she serves coffee to Vivek Oberoi stand out.
Story/Script
Barring a few loopholes, Karan Johar's story is an impressive take on terrorism that is close to reality, thought-provoking and instills the soul. The screenplay is engaging and not marred by predictability, that's what makes it an edgy and gripping tale. A discussion on whether Muslims are in wrong doing or the US powers is effectively blended in the sequence of events. However, it does have its share of clichs in form of "hamare bachche ke liye…" and "masoom aur begunah ki jaan".
Performances
Saif delivers a hard-hitting performance and his getup in the film is very much in sync with his character that of a Muslim guy who is in full control of his emotions and ambitions. A teary, sans makeup Kareena puts forth a powerful performance but we would prefer Bebo in a glam avatar any day. We wonder why Vivek Oberoi was missing from the promos when he plays a well-etched role for a major part of the film. Vivek pitches in a sincere performance, but we doubt if 'Kurbaan' will do what a 'Kal Ho Na Ho' did for Saif. As for others, Nauheed Cyrusi and Dia Mirza pack in decent special appearances.
Verdict
'Kurbaan' is an edge-of-the-seat thriller that will give you goose bumps.
Go for it for an awe-inspiring experience and to witness real-and-reel life couple Saifeena's chemistry on silver screen. Worth a dekho!

Kurbaan, from the theatrical promos, looks like a regular film made on terrorism. But it's not. A little too long (nearly 3 hours) though it is, it excels in several departments: acting, plot, screenplay, photography, costume designing, original soundtrack...basically Kurbaan is good.
But don't go to watch it if you want pure entertainment. It's above that, and a little below hard core arty films that throw you into the dungeons of depression.
The story is about Avantika- a Hindu girl (Kareena Kapoor), who falls in love with a Muslim boy, Ehsaan Khan (Saif Ali Khan), marries him and is off to the US.
Little did she know that he is a Muslim extremist, and only married her as she had a US Social Security Number and all the other legal jazz. She was his ticket into America, where he was planning something big with his "team mates".
She finds out even before the intermission, and is obviously under strict scrutiny from then on. What makes up the rest of the film is what the eventual plan is, does it get done, who dies, who wants to take revenge and who makes sacrifices.
Everyone has acted well. Even Dia Mirza who appeared for 2 seconds.
Saif has given an extremely controlled performance. He is perfect as Ehsaan; the character with gray shades. Although his character can kill in cold blood, and is merciless in his dealings, his heart is full of love for his wife.
He might have used her to gain entry into a foreign land, but that didn't change the fact that he truly loved her.
Kareena is breathtakingly beautiful. Aamir Khan was right when he said that she is so pretty you can look at her all day and yet not get bored. Her clothes were never over the top, just stylish.
Her long skirts, silver jewellery, and the knee-length skirts teamed with boots are to die for.
But Kareena isn't just a pretty face with kohl and eyeliner filled eyes. Her performance will definitely get her several nominations for her superb acting, and who knows she might win a few awards as well.
As Avantika she is a strong independent woman, though tad stupid to meddle in someone else's affairs to the extent that she enters the neighbour's basement without permission. That's called inviting trouble. Why is the female lead of movies portrayed as abysmally stupid?
She hates her husband for who he is, but can't let go of her love. Torn between the two feelings, emerges a character that is appalled, scared and yet loving.
Om Puri as Bhaijaan, the moderator of the group, is brilliant. His wife's role, Nasreen, is played remarkably well by Kirron Kher; an Afghani woman, her accent was quite authentic.
The surprise package was Vivek Oberoi, as a Television reporter, Riyaz Masood. Fine piece of acting from him. When he has the potential to act, why can't he be the lead and pull it off all by himself? Poor guy has to be content playing second fiddle to the protagonist.
The film has a handful of shots that make you squirm in your seat. When Saif kills a guy with a fork, your eyes will pop out in horror and fear. And when he himself gets shot and Kareena pulls out the bullet from his flesh, and goes ahead and stitches it up, you will want to scream out in pain.
Renzil D'Silva has done a great job as the Director and screenplay writer. But since its a Karan Johar Production you will get treated to the familiar sights of New York (a la Kal Ho Na Ho), and the picturesque America. The songs are melodious, and for a change, didn't seem inappropriate.
The film doesn't preach. It shows us that terrorists are human too. That they want revenge. But no matter what, they will meet with a sticky end.
Like Yash Chopra's New York, Kurbaan paints the real story behind 9/11. America, it tells us, as we already know, was never a victim. It has always been the harbinger of terrorism and war.

ANOTHER REVIEW
Karan Johar has accomplished what Aditya Chopra could not. Kurbaan is what New York, or for that matter, Fanaa, should have ideally been. Hats off to Karan for producing the most non-KJO movie as yet. Kurbaan is the best movie of the year, as far as meaningful cinema goes.
Kurbaan starts off as a very realistic love story, but soon turns into a gripping thriller, with lots of twists and drama, and is embellished with bravura performances. I will refrain from giving any details on the story; lets just say that the story is exactly what the trailers have shown. Its the screenplay and the realistic treatment which makes the film really a gem.
Rensil has very audaciously chosen Dharma Productions for making a movie like Kurbaan, which is devoid of any subplots, romantic interludes, or dream songs. This movie has a sharp focus, which stays till the end. The movie hits you hard without being preachy or taking sides. It etches out the psyche of a terrorist in a way that no Bollywood movie has done in a while. And it does so without any bhashans, melodrama, or flashbacks!
Technically, it felt like I was watching a Ridley Scott terrorism thriller. The camerawork, background score, and locales are spot on. Dialogues are vintage Anurag Kashyap – they pierce your heart. Sample this: An American student tells Vivek: Leave my Country, if you dont like it. Vivek retorts "Sure we will, first you leave ours (Vivek's a Muslim)"
This is best performance by Saif since Ek Haseena Thi. Forget Langda Tyagi, this is probably his toughest role, where he has to look like a typical hero, who's actually a terrorist. Saif has really portrayed the role very well. While his charms conceal his real identity, his eyes and mannerisms clearly spell his purpose. Kareena is Saif's antithesis, and she portrays the flips side of terrorism. She delivers yet again, only wished that she had more screen time!
Vivek is a real scene stealer, and a revelation! This is his return to form. If Company was raw intensity, this one is refined rage. Vivek's supporting turn should fetch him an award for sure! The rest of the cast also do well, with Kirron Kher standing out in the climax.
To sum up, Kurbaan has revived the gritty terrorism genre which was dormant since Dil Se. It might seem preposterous to say so, but Mani Ratnam will be proud of Rensil after seeing this film. Rensil has equalled all his classics, if not bettered them! Three cheers!

4.5 stars! SHIT!!
Real life couple Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor come together for Rensil D’Silva’s Kurbaan produced under the Dharma Productions banner. No publicity is bad publicity and hence the controversy surrounding the film right from the time Karan Johar revealed the first look on Twitter to the Shiv Sen protests just before release, has only helped raise the curiosity level. But come Friday, when the film witnesses a global release, it all comes down to the merits. Does Rensil D’Silva in his debut deliver? Read on to find out
The story revolves around Avantika (Kareena Kapoor) and Ehsaan (Saif Ali Khan), both professors at a university, fall in love, marry and move abroad to the United States of America. All’s good, until Kareena discovers her husband works for a terror sleeper cell and along with others, is planning an attack similar to 9/11. Under house arrest, Avantika’s only hope is a journalist (Vivek Oberoi), who is also on a mission to take his revenge on the terrorists, who were responsible for the death of his girlfriend (Dia Mirza in a special appearance).
Kurbaan Review
What works for Kurbaan
•The first half is fantastic, extremely gripping. Aided by a powerful screenplay in his very first film as director, Rensil D’Siva has managed to keep the intensity level going throughout. He also proves to be an expert story-teller, a director to watch out for.
•Also there aren’t any unwanted scenes or excessive melodrama, due to which the pace remains very consistent.
•The second half though, does get a bit heavy with the cold-blooded characters and the crafty yet involving plotline . Don’t expect a moment of relief, till the credits roll - a good 2 hours 40 mins later.
•What makes Kurbaan a must watch are superlative performances (rated below) from the entire cast - right from the lead stars to those FBI characters played by foreigners.
•Technically the film is brilliant too. High on production value, even the blast sequences and the aftermath have been shot with attention to every small detail.
•Music, like in most Dharma productions, is top notch. Shukran Allah and Ali Maula deserve mention.
•Dialogues (Anurag Kashyap and Niranjan Iyenga) are very effective, especially those written for Saif and Vivek.
Scenes to watch out for (Possible spoilers below)
•When Kareena gets to know the ’shocking’ truth.
•Vivek’s test at the burger / sandwich shop, when he is asked to shoot the chef down.
•Kareena cutting open the wound to remove the bullet off Saif’s chest.
•The much discussed love making scene featuring Kareena and Saif. Loads of skin show (bare back) but tastefully shot.
•Climax
Performances (in order)
1.Vivek Oberoi - Given a meaty role, Vivek delivers a performance comparable to the likes of Company and Shootout at Lokanwala. Re-birth of a star, if you could call it so. Here’s hoping, he gets noticed and Kurbaan proves to be the much needed boost to his career. What also deserves a mention is his enunciation, which is spot on.
2.Saif Ali Khan - Very consistent and a performance that stays with you, long after you leave theaters.
3.Kareena Kapoor - In a depressing character is very effective.
4.Om Puri, Kirron Kher and the rest of the cast are very good.
5.Dia Mirza - In a very sweet character, looked stunningly beautiful. How we wish, she had a longer role.
Negatives, not many
•Family audiences may not enjoy a few sequences. As the movie progresses, it does get too heavy. There is a decent amount of blood and gore too.
•4 -5 people organizing a terror attack of such magnitude. isn’t too very convincing. Especially the first plane bombing.
•The climax, while shocking, may not be universally accepted.
Overall, Kurbaan is a fascinating watch and arguably the best Dharma Productions film this decade. Forget comparisons with New York, this ones much better. Go for it.

Bombay Court calls Kurbaan songs 'vulgar'
The two tracks will be deleted from the film
By IANS . Nov 19, 2009
The Bombay High Court Thursday declined to stay release of film Kurbaan, due to be out Friday, but sought the responses of filmmaker Karan Johar and actors Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor to a petition terming two of its songs "vulgar".
A division bench of Chief Justice Swatanter Kumar and Justice A M Khanvilkar slated the next hearing for Jan 14, 2010.
Petitioner Mohammed Ali demanded that the film's release be stayed or the film be released after deleting the two objectionable songs. The division bench declined both pleas.
Ali said he plans to move the same petition in the Supreme Court soon.
Advocate S Kunjuraman, representing Ali, said the court took a serious note of the lyrics of the two songs and also sought the response of movie director Rensil D'Silva, and lyricists Irfan Siddiqui and Niranjan Iyengar.
Among other things, the petitioner contended that the two songs in the movie contained objectionable and misleading lyrics which portray Islam in a negative light.
"In one song (Shukran Allah, Walhamdo Lillah...), the two stars are having physical relations and the song is played with them expressing gratitude to Allah. This is wrong and misleading," said Ali soon after emerging from the court.
In the other song (Ali Maula..), which is the name of the son-in-law of Prophet Mohammed, the terrorist is invoking the name of and seeking Allah's help to carry out terror acts.
"This is not only wrong interpretation on the tenets of Islam, but it sends out a wrong message to the common masses," he pointed out.
Kunjuraman said that the petitioner had written to the Central Board of Film Censors last week demanding the deletion of the two songs with the objectionable lyrics, but the board did not take any measure.
The two tracks will be deleted from the film
